Rural Fire Defense Program

What is Rural Fire Defense?

Rural Fire Defense provides grant monies, equipment, construction and technical assistance to rural fire departments through the Oklahoma State Department of Agriculture Forestry Division.

This program provides assistance to organize, develop and construct new fire departments or districts in low income areas receiving poor or non-existent fire protection.

Surplused military vehicles converted to fire vehicles can be obtained at no cost by departments serving a population of fewer than 10,000 persons. Technical assistance is provided to fire departments to aid in reducing ISO ratings for communities.

Matching grant programs through the department of agriculture to provide protective equipment, wet hydrant purchase and installation assistance is available through Rural Fire Defense. Grant maximums for these programs vary.

Operational grants of up to $5100 can be obtained annually by all certified departments. Funds can be used for operating expenses, fuel and utilities by certified departments serving communities with a population of 10,000 or less.
