Silver
Haired Legislature
Grand
Gateway Liaison Barbara Dove: bdove@ggeda.com.
Created
in 1981 to educate senior citizens in the legislative process and
to highlight their needs to the Oklahoma State Legislature.
Candidates
for office must be 60 years of age or older and must be registered
voters in their Oklahoma precinct. Legislators are elected for two-year
terms in districts which correspond to the state's planning and
service areas. The legislature is comprised of 22 senators and 44
representatives and 66 alternates. Elections are held in even numbered
years.
The
Silver Haired Legislature meets at the State Capitol in Oklahoma
City in late October each year for a two-day training session. During
the training session, House and Senate leaders are elected by their
peers. During the legislative session, more than 20 bills and resolutions
are screened in committees and debated in the chambers. The bills
and resolutions which pass the joint session are prioritized and
the top five submitted to the Oklahoma State Legislature for consideration.
